Major Apple CarPlay Overhaul Coming

Apple announced its next generation of Apple CarPlay on Monday, and unlike the current version, this one will have much deeper integration with dashboards and infotainment systems.

It’s going to provide content for all the driver’s screens – not just the center stack.

Apple is promising deep integration into each car’s hardware for things like custom gauge packages and even widgets.

Drivers will be able to customize their gauge clusters with either modern or traditional looks.

Like the existing version of CarPlay, the next-gen system will be powered by each driver’s iPhone.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding the details but Apple says its big overhaul of CarPlay will be coming a sizable list of automakers that include the ones on this list provided by Apple:

Apple said vehicles that qualify for the fully integrated version of the next-gen CarPlay will be announced starting in late-2024. To see animations of the upcoming Apple CarPlay watch the video in this post.

That makes sense since Android is also stepping up its car game with deals to introduce a deeply integrated Android Automotive, which is different than Android Auto, in car brands like Ford and Polestar.

Notably absent from today’s announcement is Tesla, which continues to shun Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
