Italian automakers are doing their best to bust out of the boring just another SUV EV mold.

This week on EV Rider we’re taking a video look at the Italian EVs that were on display at the 2025 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

Could The Fiat Topolino Be Coming To A Beach Town Near You?

Let’s start with the most unconventional car and that’s the Fiat Topolino. Here in the states it’s best described as a LSV – or low speed vehicle.

The best direct comparison is golf carts, which have gotten quite popular in beach towns and master planned communities as a second or third vehicle.

A spokeswoman told me Fiat is seriously considering importing the Topolino in the U.S.

It’s hard to know what it would cost, especially with the trade war instigated by the Trump administration, but she told me the target is $10,000, while in Europe it’s expected to be available at a price equivalent to under $12,000.

Given new golf carts can easily top $14,000 if Fiat could import it for $12,000 or less, it could be an attractive new option, although with the trade war, who knows.

The Topolino goes approximately 46 miles on a charge, which given it’s meant to be only a neighborhood runabout is perfectly fine.

It has a top speed of about 28 miles per hour, which also works here in the U.S. where the speed limit for golf carts and other LSVs is 25 miles per hour.

Perhaps the Topolino’s most delightful aspect is its style, which harkens back to the old Fiat 500 Jollys. They were beach-buggy styled cars designed by Ghia that were popular in the 1950s and 1960s at some seaside resorts. You’ll find a few video clips of those in the video at the top of this post.

Fiat Finally Sells Second Generation 500e In U.S.

Next, is Fiat’s latest U.S. entry, the 500e; which recently returned to the states as one of the most affordable EVs currently on sale. It was originally introduced in Europe in 2020 as the model line’s second generation EV.

Now that MINI has stopped importing the Cooper SE EV to the U.S., Fiat has the subcompact EV car market to itself for the moment.

At the time of this posting, Fiat was offering a lease deal on the 500e for as little as $156 a month for 2-years with $2,000 due at signing. MSRP starts at $32,500

That gets you a nice urban car with Apple Car Play, Android Auto, classic 500 styling and handling. It’s achilles heel is range, which is rated at 149 miles per charge from its 42 kWh battery. It has a peak DC charging speed of 85 kW, which adds 31 miles in 5 minutes. It takes 35 minutes to reach 80% of charge.

Next up is Masarati’s 2025 GranTurismo Folgore coupe and convertible. The coupe starts at $192,000 while the cabrio is based priced at $205,000.

Since I didn’t get a chance to spend any time with the Masaratis, we’ll leave the details for another episode at some point down the road, but they are certainly stylish rides. This week on EV Rider we’re bringing you a first video look at the Lotus Eletre Carbon from the 2025 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance along with an interview with Lotus President and CEO of the Americas Massimiliano “Max” Trantini.

This is one of the fastest charging EVs I’ve yet to encounter, with a rated maximum peak charging speed of 350 kW. It’s also a member of the elite sub-three second to 60 mph club thanks to its two speed transmission, which is somewhat rare in the world of EVs.

Although the Porsche Taycan also has a two-speed, most EVs, including Tesla’s Model S Plaid, are limited to a single-speed transmission with many manufacturers believing that is all that’s needed for performance and efficency.

Lotus says the Eletre can sprint from 0-62 mph in 2.96 seconds and lists horsepower at a staggering 905 (see spec sheet below). The torque will throw you back in your seat, coming in at 727 lb ft.

Trantini says even though the Eletre Carbon marks a new direction for Lotus, the handling traits that made the sports car company famous have transitioned nicely into the EV’s SUV form factor.

Thanks to its driving modes, Lotus engineers managed to tune the Eletre Carbon’s suspension to be both flat and precise for track days while still soaking up the potholes with aplomb on city streets.

Lotus lists the weight of the Eletre as starting at 2,640 kilograms, which translates to an estimated 5,820 pounds. Trantini says the Lotus engineering team made sure that weight, which is necessitated by the batteries, isn’t noticeable when driving.

With twin motors and AWD the Eletre Carbon is powered by a 111.9 kWh battery pack, which is rated by the European WLTP test cycle to be good for more than 280 miles worth of range per charge. The EPA’s estimated range wasn’t available yet.

The Eletre Carbon’s sticker price starts at $229,900 in the U.S. For the rest of the story, including handling impressions from Trantini, an interior tour and more; watch the video at the top of this post.

The long waits are just about over. Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz and ID. 7 are expected to go on sale later this year here in the U.S. EV Rider got up close looks at both at the 2024 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

2024 is the year that Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup gets a full slate of EVs in three of the automotive industry’s biggest segments. 

First up, the ID. Buzz is finally scheduled to begin U.S. deliveries later this year. Volkswagen brought the U.S. version of the ID. Buzz to The Amelia where it garnered plenty of interest. 

Jim Reynolds is the general manager at Jacksonville, FL’s Tom Bush VW, where they’re already accepting preorders. “So what this [U.S. spec ID. Buzz] will be is a little longer wheelbase and then tailored for the American market.” Jim says to look for the U.S. version to have things like captain’s chairs in the middle or bench seating and generally more room to stretch out or haul things than the European short-wheelbase version.

The ID. Buzz is expected to be the first consumer full-EV minivan available in the states and is expected to be available with a choice of 282-hp single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup or a 330-hp dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. 

The official battery size and EPA range ratings weren’t available at the time of this post’s publication but it will probably have at least 260 miles of range.  

While U.S. preorders are now being accepted it’s a little too soon to say exactly when deliveries will begin. “We’ve got our fingers crossed. [Deliveries will] probably begin by the end of the year. So fall, winter, or something like that,” Jim said.

ID. 7 Will Be VW’s 1st EV Sedan

Volkswagen is also going after the heart of the sedan market with its new ID. 7. It’s likely to start somewhere around $50,000, according to Car and Driver. It will challenge EVs like the BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and of course the current benchmark, Tesla’s Model 3. 

“This segment is going to heat up. Cars have sort of been overlooked for all these years, and Tesla’s done a good job in that market. But if you notice, BMW’s really penetrating that market well, and we needed a a sedan to compete in that market as well,” Jim said.

Final pricing, range, trim levels and specific details for the ID. 7 hadn’t been released at the time of this video’s publishing but were expected at any moment since like the ID. Buzz, the ID. 7 is expected to go on sale in the U.S. before year’s end.  

Jim sums up what he thinks the ID. 7’s greatest strengths will be. “I think it’s the looks. The car looks amazing, when the batteries, of course, are so low. The car handles like a dream.”

He adds that VW will be bringing the heat when it comes to marketing, volume and dealer support. “Being the biggest car company in the world, Volkswagen is going to do everything they can. They’re going to throw all their tools at it in terms of battery capability, price point, supply; all those kind of things. So I think we’re gonna have a good shot at it.”

Chrysler showed off its latest EV concept at the 2024 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

The Halcyon sedan represents what Chrysler calls “harmony in motion.” It’s meant to show off the brand’s future technology and some of its styling direction.

EV Rider got an in-depth interview with Chrysler Brand CEO Christine Feuell at The Amelia. She says the Halcyon includes everything from a new take on the Pacifica minivan’s Stow-N-Go seating to an 800-volt lithium-sulfur battery. She says as envisioned, it’s able to add up to 40 miles of charge per minute and would include Level 4 Autonomy, meaning the car will be able to self-drive.

With no b-pillar and an expansive glass roof, the inside is incredibly airy with a 15.6-inch center console and heads-up display providing the needed controls and instrumentation.

Feuell says electrification marks the future of Chrysler. “From 2025 through the end of the decade, all of our vehicles will be battery electric.”

She goes on to say that 95% of the intererior is made with sustainable materials, including an Easter egg that is a nod to the Motor City. The Chrysler logo in the door sill is made from recycled CDs to pay homage to Detroit’s history as a music hub and home of Motown.

Feuell feel’s Chrysler’s design team nailed the look. “It’s beautiful. It’s edgy, but it’s also aerodynamic. And that was a big part of the design language that we were incorporating similar. We eliminated the traditional mirrors and these are cameras with the images that project on the center screen and also the heads up display.”

Although Feuell is bullish about the future of the sedan market, it’s too soon to say whether a variation of the Halcyon concept will be greenlit for production. For starters, Fuelle admits that to bring the current design to market some engineering challenges would have to be overcome. But she isn’t ruling it out, including a production version potentially including the concept’s coach doors in the rear.

So far the one thing that is confirmed for production is the new Chrysler logo that adorns the concept.

While EV Rider enthusiastically supports the rollout of zero-emission vehicles, it’s also worth looking at ways to offset the carbon emissions that classic cars create.  

But the question becomes: how can classic car owners simultaneously be good stewards of the environment without destroying the value or character of a classic with mechanical modifications?

Classic car insurance company Hagerty has come up with an answer it’s calling the Enthusiast Carbon Offset Program (ECO). 

The voluntary opt-in program lets Hagerty’s customers monitor their CO2 emissions by entering their vehicle’s type and the mileage they want to offset into a web-based emissions calculator, powered by Chrome Carbon. 

You might be surprised to learn how affordable offsetting a classic gasoline car’s CO2 emissions can be.  

“The carbon offset costs are fairly moderate, actually. You’re looking at – for an average enthusiast – about $30 a year to offset your total carbon emissions,” said Hagerty spokesman Jeremy Malcolm. 

Planting trees is a proven way to take CO2 out of the atmosphere, according to scientists, which is where Chrome Carbon comes in. 

Chrome Carbon partners with certified climate bodies and organizations to fund reforestation and carbon reduction projects with what Hagerty says are real, measurable gains. 

The trees are planted in the U.S., Canada or the U.K. 

Classic car owners can choose how much of a CO2 offset they want to purchase. 

“We believe the love of driving and the love of our planet can and must co-exist,” said Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty. “As part of our long-term environmental strategy, we are committed to helping automotive enthusiasts responsibly make a difference with simple and affordable steps such as this program.” 

Worldwide, approximately 72 percent of people believe that protecting and restoring natural habitats would be a helpful solution in addressing climate change, according to an Edelman Trust Barometer 2022 special report on climate change. 

Chrome Carbon partners with organizations working closely with national forest agencies, local forest experts and farmers, making sure that the right trees are planted and looked after. according to a news release from Hagerty.  

“If you’re environmentally conscious and you have a classic car, this is a great way to enjoy it without worrying about any impact that you might have on the environment,” said Malcolm. 

It’s a relatively eco-friendly way to keep classic cars running for decades to come while at the same time protecting the environment for future generations.
