Our EV Riding friends in Southern California are starting a big monthly electric motorcycle meetup.

The inaugural event is Saturday, September 27, 2025 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Rove charging station in Santa Ana. A custom EV motorcycle contest winner will be announced around 11:30 am.

Most of us have never seen a charging station as big as the Rove’s in Santa Ana. It has 40 DC charging stalls with solar canopies along with a full-service, on-site convenience store.

Rove charging station/Santa Ana, CA | Photo credit: Rove.com

Organizer Diego Cardenas is hoping to grow the gathering into a large monthly event and he’s off to a great start with a first-class website to kick off the inaugural event.

Cardenas has a strong track record activating the EV motorcycling community. He was the guy behind the EV Motorcycle takeover at the Bike Shed in Los Angeles and is well known in the LiveWire EV motorcycling community.

He’s also the co-founder of Xoto, which is a California-based company that makes 3-wheel leaning electric scooters.

You can register for the meetup here. All electric motorcyclists and those with EV-powered 2-wheel and 3-wheel vehicles are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Xoto and Rove are co-sponsoring the inaugural event.

This week on EV Rider we’ve got a video road test of what has to be the rarest Founders Series Edition Cybertruck on Florida’s First Coast.

That’s because it’s been customized in Atlanta at T Sportline with T-Max Gloss Black Paint Protection Film. The bumpers also been redone in gloss black along with 24-inch CTM Monoblock Gloss Black Wheels.

You’ll have to watch the video at the top of this post for the full road test and details but here are some quick facts about Tesla‘s Cybertruck:

Tesla says Cybertrucks with the Cyberbeast trim can hit 60 miles per hour in just 2.6 seconds.

The Cybertruck should be great at worksites and during power outages since it can put out up to 9.6 kW of bidirectional power. That’s enough to power most homes – including the fridge and central air – during a black out.

It has a range of up to 340 miles per charge and can add up to 136 miles of range in 15 minutes in ideal conditions at the latest 250kW Tesla Superchargers.

You can also order a second battery called a range extender that goes in the pickup bed for even more range and power. But there’s a downside (outside of the extra cost). It will take approximately 33% of the vehicle’s bed and Tesla says it will not be removable. At last report the price for the range extender had not been announced but it was expected to cost approximately $16,000.

When you want to get away from it all the Cybertruck has up to 17-inches of ground clearance in Beast mode.

At the time of the video’s recording the base price for the rear-wheel-drive version started around $61,000 while the Cyberbeast trim with tri motor AWD started at about $100,000.

EV startup Canoo appears to be gathering momentum ahead of its second quarter 2024 earnings call. On July 3 the EV fleet manufacturer announced Go2 Delivery is buying five EV delivery vans with an option to buy 85 more.

Go2 Delivery will be using Canoo’s Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle 130 (LDV130) for healthcare deliveries in Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay area. Go2 Delivery says it is a carbon-free courier company committed to sustainable practices and the restoration of the local Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

Meanwhile, there have been numerous sightings around Atlanta of Canoo’s postal delivery vans. Canoo has delivered six of its LDV190 EV vans to the U.S. Postal Service where they are now being used at the South Atlanta Sorting and Delivery Center to deliver the mail.

Related: More Canoo video and story coverage

Canoo says the LDV190 has a 79-kWh battery that provides over 200 miles of range with a peak DC charging speed of 150 kW. The company says the vans charge from 20 to 80 percent in 32 minutes.

The EV manufacturer says it’s finally starting its production ramp at its Oklahoma City plant, taking delivery of 44 containers with assembly robots in June.

That news comes as Canoo joins the Russell 3000 stock index. The Russell 3000 Index measures the performance of the 3,000 largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. by market capitalization.

June also marked Canoo Chief Financial Officer Greg Ethridge taking part in a round of investor conferences where he discussed the company’s ambitions to enter international markets. A portion of Ethridge’s comments from an investor call are in the video at the top of this post.

Among the markets Canoo is interested in is Saudi Arabia where Canoo announced its EVs will be used in a pilot program by Red Sea Global. Canoo says Red Sea will be using its Lifestyle Vehicle, LDV 190 and Bulldog pick up truck to travel between Sea Global’s international airport and its various resorts.

The company also showed off its EVs in June in the United Kingdom at the Millbrook Proving Grounds. Because Canoo uses a drive-by-wire system it can easily pivot between left-and-right hand drive EVs.

The EV manufacturer was recognized in June with three Red Dot Design Awards. It’s LDV 190 won Best of the Best in the commercial vehicles category, while also being nominated for Red Dot’s Luminary award. Canoo’s Bulldog EV pickup also won a 2024 Red Dot Design Award.

The Red Dot Design Award is an international design competition recognizing excellence that’s been around since 1955.

Although I’m a long-time EV owner, until recently there’s one thing I would have never thought to check if I was buying a used EV.

Recently a friend of mine bought an EV motorcycle. He soon plugged it in at a Level 2 charger and found he was only getting half the charging speed the station was putting out. That’s because in his case one of the motorcycle’s two onboard AC chargers had failed.

It’s something that should have been discovered or disclosed before the sale. But it wasn’t, so with that in mind if you’re shopping for a used EV here’s something you’re going to want to do.

Confirm the vehicle’s AC and DC charging systems are working properly.

If the EV doesn’t doesn’t come with a bumper-to-bumper warranty try to test the vehicle’s charge rates at two different charging stations during a test drive if that’s possible.

Why two? Most – but not all – EVs have two different charging systems: One is an onboard AC charging inverter and the other is DC fast charging. Each charging system has a rated peak charging speed that varies from model to model.

Level 2 AC chargers are common in homes and shopping centers while DC chargers are often used during longer interstate road trips.

If the seller won’t let you test charge it, get something in writing guaranteeing the charging set up works properly and stating the seller will pay for any needed repair if it doesn’t.

For example, the Ford Mustang Mach-E in the video at the top of this post has a peak AC charging speed of 11kW and a peak DC Charging speed of just over 150 kW.

The Zero Motorcycles SR/F in the video has a rated peak charging speed of 6.6 kW, although with charging losses figured in, it will usually only peak at 6.4 or 6.5. In the case of this Zero, different models have different charging speeds, depending on how they are optioned.

That sometimes holds true for cars as well with base models occasionally having slower charging speeds than fully optioned ones.

The main thing to confirm is that the car or motorcycle starts charging as expected.

Different models have vastly different charging speeds depending on a variety of conditions so I can’t tell you exactly what speed you’re looking for, but here’s a general rule of thumb. If you’re at a Level 2 charger, with rare exceptions, the EV should charge at a rate above 5 kW.

If you’re at a DC charger it should charge at a rate of at least 40 kW, unless the battery is above 80 percent of charge.

These are just general guidelines and there are exceptions. For example, DC-enabled motorcycles charge much slower than cars due to their smaller batteries and some slow Level 2 chargers are limited to 3.5 kW of charging speed – or even a bit less.

Once the charging session begins you should be able to see the speed you’re getting either on your vehicle’s display, its app or on the charging station display. The speed should quickly climb and then settle in.

If a charge rate appears to be really slow, it’s time to start asking the seller why. If the seller doesn’t have answers it might be time to walk way, unless you are able to determine the problem lies with the charging station.

The odds of running into this issue are small but since many used EVs are sold “as is” it’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you’re new to EVs and need a more detailed explanation or have a question about a specific brand, drop me a note in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer your question. If you’ve found this episode of EV Rider useful please subscribe to the EV Rider YouTube channel.
EV startup Canoo (NASDAQ stock symbol GOEV) built 22 vehicles in 2023, with 17 of those being built in the fourth quarter, the company announced during its 4th quarter call on April 1, 2024.

Twelve Canoo EVs were delivered to customers including NASA, Kingbee and the State of Oklahoma; with ten being used for sales and demonstration purposes.

Related: More Canoo coverage

Among the early 2024 high-profile scheduled deliveries are six right-hand drive versions of the LDV 190 to the U.S. Postal Service. “Lookout for the first vehicle vehicles delivering your mail starting this May,” said Canoo Chairman and CEO Tony Aquila during the call.

In addition to the Postal Service, the U.S. Army is also evaluating Canoo EVs for potential orders.

Because Canoo is using driving-by-wire technology it’s relatively easy to create right-hand-drive vehicles, which Aquila says is sparking interest in Europe and is why the Postal Service is evaluating the EVs for potentially a larger purchase order. “We will showcase our right-hand-drive vehicles at several UK commercial vehicle fleet events in the coming weeks.”

Aquila said the company remains on track to reach a 20,000 run-rate capacity this year although Canoo likely won’t come anywhere close to building that many EVs in 2024. Instead, the startup expects to build somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,000 EVs in 2024 using what Canoo calls a stair-step approach.

The idea is rather than burning through a bunch of capital in the beginning by building vehicles at a per unit loss to instead build a small number at a profit and then gradually increase the assembly line speed to avoid losses and quality defects.

Source: Canoo investor presentation

Aquila said Canoo is using the same basic playbook that Henry Ford and Tesla’s Elon Musk have used. “While it was chaotic and difficult, their phased approach was purely positive. As you can see [see chart image] as they moved from 3000 units and stepped up to a 20,000 unit run rate. They had their economics right.”

The CEO stressed he is very mindful of capital and wants to avoid the predicaments some other manufacturers have gotten themselves into by ramping up production too fast.

Source: Canoo investor presentation

“If you look at the slide that we gave, an example of the other companies, it is very tough to make it up on volume when you get the foundation wrong and that’s why we minimize the number of parts, increase the amount of technology and our own,” adding, “this is the right way to do it. To get to the right economics and to be able to deliver a high quality product.

Canoo also snapped up some manufacturing assets at 20 cents on the dollar from Arrival Automotive UK Limited’s venture that failed, which Canoo says will allow it to further lower capital costs.

The startup has decided to steer clear of consumer customers for now, instead selling to fleet customers such as government entitities and businesses like Walmart.

Canoo has also been awarded a foreign trade zone designation, which gives it another leg up on getting per unit costs down.

The company is forecasting revenue of between $50 and $100 million in 2024 while it expects a cash burn rate of between $45 million and $75 million per quarter.

Source: Canoo investor presentation

Despite that financial imbalance, the CEO expressed confidence he will be able to continue raising capital as needed. “We’ve been very effective at being able to take the market opportunities and reduce the spend that we would otherwise have done. We spent hundreds of millions less than others.”

Canoo also announced a $45 million dollar infusion from an unnamed foreign investor.

Some investors listening to the call weren’t impressed. In after-hours trading Canoo stock saw a big dip, although it did see a bit of a rebound in the next morning. When this post was published Canoo was still down overall to $2.80 from the previous day’s close of $3.87 [Current Canoo stock price].
Motorcyclists have been modifying their bikes for generations. Now an exciting new chapter is emerging with a North Carolina business launching a patented EV conversion system that allows owners to make the switch to EV without giving up their beloved classics.

Shandoka Electric Motorcycles, based in Mars Hill, has developed an all-in-one system that includes everything needed to do the conversion.

The company is starting with Japanese bikes like the Yamaha XS 400 Maxin and Kawasaki Ninja 250 because of their frames were developed.

“The real trick to this bike is that it’s got a structural engine. So because there’s no frame that goes beneath the engine itself that lets us use our patented adapter to convert the bike to electricity and maintains the structural integrity of the bike, but gives you plenty of freedom,” said Shandoka Electric Motorcycles Founder Ernest Eich, discussing the first Yamaha to be converted.

Shandoka is offering turnkey conversions that include everything from the battery pack to hub motor to BMS (battery management system), relays and all the rest.

So what about converting V-Twin bikes like Harley and such? They’re on the roadmap as well. Ernest says his company is made up of a group of designers, tuners and welders.

Shandoka Electric Motorcycles Founder Ernest Eich

There are a variety of price points, battery sizes and custom fabrications available to ensure customers can spec their EV-conversions exactly the way they want them.

Shandoka claims its patented system is future proof by allowing relatively quick battery swaps when even better battery technology emerges five or ten years down the road.

EV Rider was the first media outlet to take the very first converted Shandoka Electric Motorcycle for a spin. It felt great; with brisk acceleration, excellent balance and competent braking.

What about battery sizes, range, cost, the BMS (battery management system), availability, turnaround time and so many other questions?

Those questions and many are answered in the video at the top of this post, which gets into the nitty-gritty tech details.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on Shandoka’s very first EV motorcycle and look forward to following the company now that it’s made it from the research and development stage to the point of taking orders on builds to deliver to customers. The turn around time for customers at the time of this post was approximately 3-4 months.

While Shandoka is inititally taking it slow to make sure its first customer builds are up to snuff, it’s also accepting dealer and builder inquiries as it also looks beyond the initital ramp up. For anyone interested in becoming a Shandoka Electric Motorcycles dealer or builder, fill out the form on Shandoka’s website.

If you enjoy the video, please give it a like and subscribe to the EV Rider YouTube channel so I can bring you more adventures in EV motoring.

The long waits are just about over. Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz and ID. 7 are expected to go on sale later this year here in the U.S. EV Rider got up close looks at both at the 2024 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

2024 is the year that Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup gets a full slate of EVs in three of the automotive industry’s biggest segments.

First up, the ID. Buzz is finally scheduled to begin U.S. deliveries later this year. Volkswagen brought the U.S. version of the ID. Buzz to The Amelia where it garnered plenty of interest.

Jim Reynolds is the general manager at Jacksonville, FL’s Tom Bush VW, where they’re already accepting preorders. “So what this [U.S. spec ID. Buzz] will be is a little longer wheelbase and then tailored for the American market.” Jim says to look for the U.S. version to have things like captain’s chairs in the middle or bench seating and generally more room to stretch out or haul things than the European short-wheelbase version.

This U.S. spec VW ID. Buzz at the 2024 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

The ID. Buzz is expected to be the first consumer full-EV minivan available in the states and is expected to be available with a choice of 282-hp single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup or a 330-hp dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain.

The official battery size and EPA range ratings weren’t available at the time of this post’s publication but it will probably have at least 260 miles of range.

While U.S. preorders are now being accepted it’s a little too soon to say exactly when deliveries will begin. “We’ve got our fingers crossed. [Deliveries will] probably begin by the end of the year. So fall, winter, or something like that,” Jim said.

ID. 7 Will Be VW’s 1st EV Sedan

Pictured left to right at The Amelia: ID. Buzz, ID. 3, Classic gas-powered Golf, ID. 7. | Photo credit: VW

Volkswagen is also going after the heart of the sedan market with its new ID. 7. It’s likely to start somewhere around $50,000, according to Car and Driver. It will challenge EVs like the BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and of course the current benchmark, Tesla’s Model 3.

“This segment is going to heat up. Cars have sort of been overlooked for all these years, and Tesla’s done a good job in that market. But if you notice, BMW’s really penetrating that market well, and we needed a a sedan to compete in that market as well,” Jim said.

Final pricing, range, trim levels and specific details for the ID. 7 hadn’t been released at the time of this video’s publishing but were expected at any moment since like the ID. Buzz, the ID. 7 is expected to go on sale in the U.S. before year’s end.

Jim sums up what he thinks the ID. 7’s greatest strengths will be. “I think it’s the looks. The car looks amazing, when the batteries, of course, are so low. The car handles like a dream.”

He adds that VW will be bringing the heat when it comes to marketing, volume and dealer support. “Being the biggest car company in the world, Volkswagen is going to do everything they can. They’re going to throw all their tools at it in terms of battery capability, price point, supply; all those kind of things. So I think we’re gonna have a good shot at it.”

Fluffy’s Review Of The VW ID. Buzz

Back to the ID. Buzz, one of the most famous U.S. celebrities that’s already driven the EV minivan is comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who is commonly known as “Fluffy.”

For his hot take on the ID. Buzz, watch this episode of EV Rider and if you enjoy it please subscribe to the EV Rider YouTube channel.

She says the Halcyon includes everything from a new take on the Pacifica minivan’s Stow-N-Go seating to an 800-volt lithium-sulfur battery. She says as envisioned, it’s able to add up to 40 miles of charge per minute and would include Level 4 Autonomy, meaning the car will be able to self-drive.

With no b-pillar and an expansive glass roof, the inside is incredibly airy with a 15.6-inch center console and heads-up display providing the needed controls and instrumentation.

The Halcyon was on display at the 2024 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in Florida.

Feuell says electrification marks the future of Chrysler. “From 2025 through the end of the decade, all of our vehicles will be battery electric.”

She goes on to say that 95% of the intererior is made with sustainable materials, including an Easter egg that is a nod to the Motor City. The Chrysler logo in the door sill is made from recycled CDs to pay homage to Detroit’s history as a music hub and home of Motown.

Related: More Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance coverage

Feuell feel’s Chrysler’s design team nailed the look. “It’s beautiful. It’s edgy, but it’s also aerodynamic. And that was a big part of the design language that we were incorporating similar. We eliminated the traditional mirrors and these are cameras with the images that project on the center screen and also the heads up display.”

Chrysler brand CEO Christine Feuell

Although Feuell is bullish about the future of the sedan market, it’s too soon to say whether a variation of the Halcyon concept will be greenlit for production. For starters, Fuelle admits that to bring the current design to market some engineering challenges would have to be overcome. But she isn’t ruling it out, including a production version potentially including the concept’s coach doors in the rear.

So far the one thing that is confirmed for production is the new Chrysler logo that adorns the concept.

There’s a lot more to the Halcyon’s story. Watch the video at the top of this post for a tour of the concept and additional details about its features and the future of the Chrysler brand. If you enjoy the video please give it a like and subscribe to the EV Rider YouTube channel.

Correction: Feuell’s last name was misspelled in an earlier version of this story due to a missed typo. EV Rider apologizes for the error.
