Converting classic cars into EVs has been picking up steam with everything from classic Ford Mustangs and MGBs to old favorites like Volkswagen Beetles and Buses having their engines and gas tanks swapped for motors and batteries. 

Mark Gilbert’s 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle generates plenty of attention wherever he goes thanks to his EV conversion, which he estimates took him about a 100-days of labor over the course of more than two years. 

And it’s still not done. But that’s really more because Mark likes to tinker. For example, he started out by putting the batteries in the trunk before deciding to move them behind the rear seats. 

Then he decided he wanted to turn his EV into what he calls a “Florida Swamp Buggy.” 

Mark did the work himself, buying most of the components from Texas-based EV conversion company Hawkeye Innovations, LLC.  

“I retired about five years ago and I was an aircraft mechanic, but I didn’t have a strong electrical background,” he said, adding he watched lots of YouTube how-to videos, including a bunch by Jehu Garcia, who is closely associated with EV West, a Californian a EV conversion company. Garcia converted his 1957 Volkswagen Samba Bus to EV. 

Mark’s Beetle has five Tesla Model S modules that make up his 27kWh battery pack. They power a Netgain Hyper9 Motor. 

The brains of the conversion is a System Control Module (SCM) from Hawkeye, which Mark says the company will customize for just about any automotive application. 

Beetles are among the easiest cars to convert to EVs because they have so few electrical components to start with as compared to modern cars. So Mark didn’t have to worry about powering things like the steering, air conditioning, radio or windows. But for those that do want modern amenities, Mark says Hawkeye can wire up a SCM to power all sorts of accessories. 

Since the video was originally produced, he’s also added a milk jug and motorized flapper that creates a rumble sound effect that’s become a viral sensation

Perhaps one of the most unique pieces of the conversion is the motorcycle throttle. Mark put in a switch that allows him to either drive with a traditional foot pedal, or the throttle. Using the throttle is much more precise and allows for faster acceleration. 

Mark estimates his Super Beetle’s acceleration is about three times as fast as VW’s old air cooled engine.

While EV Rider enthusiastically supports the rollout of zero-emission vehicles, it’s also worth looking at ways to offset the carbon emissions that classic cars create.  

But the question becomes: how can classic car owners simultaneously be good stewards of the environment without destroying the value or character of a classic with mechanical modifications?

Classic car insurance company Hagerty has come up with an answer it’s calling the Enthusiast Carbon Offset Program (ECO). 

The voluntary opt-in program lets Hagerty’s customers monitor their CO2 emissions by entering their vehicle’s type and the mileage they want to offset into a web-based emissions calculator, powered by Chrome Carbon. 

You might be surprised to learn how affordable offsetting a classic gasoline car’s CO2 emissions can be.  

“The carbon offset costs are fairly moderate, actually. You’re looking at – for an average enthusiast – about $30 a year to offset your total carbon emissions,” said Hagerty spokesman Jeremy Malcolm. 

Planting trees is a proven way to take CO2 out of the atmosphere, according to scientists, which is where Chrome Carbon comes in. 

Chrome Carbon partners with certified climate bodies and organizations to fund reforestation and carbon reduction projects with what Hagerty says are real, measurable gains. 

The trees are planted in the U.S., Canada or the U.K. 

Classic car owners can choose how much of a CO2 offset they want to purchase. 

“We believe the love of driving and the love of our planet can and must co-exist,” said Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty. “As part of our long-term environmental strategy, we are committed to helping automotive enthusiasts responsibly make a difference with simple and affordable steps such as this program.” 

Worldwide, approximately 72 percent of people believe that protecting and restoring natural habitats would be a helpful solution in addressing climate change, according to an Edelman Trust Barometer 2022 special report on climate change. 

Chrome Carbon partners with organizations working closely with national forest agencies, local forest experts and farmers, making sure that the right trees are planted and looked after. according to a news release from Hagerty.  

“If you’re environmentally conscious and you have a classic car, this is a great way to enjoy it without worrying about any impact that you might have on the environment,” said Malcolm. 

It’s a relatively eco-friendly way to keep classic cars running for decades to come while at the same time protecting the environment for future generations.

Gabriel Iglesias, the comedian also known as Fluffy, graciously stopped by as a guest on EV Rider to review VW’s ID Buzz as we kick off our multi-episode coverage of the 2023 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. 

The California-based comedian is a huge fan of Volkswagen’s original air-cooled bus. Top Speed reports he owns more than 80 of them so it only makes sense he would come to Florida to see Volkswagen’s historic display of buses with the upcoming 2024 ID Buzz as the centerpiece.

“I took it out on the highway,” Gabriel told EV Rider. “It rides great. It is definitely not the old-school traditional Volkswagen Bus that will leave you on the side of the 405 Freeway. This thing actually gets you there. And get’s you there pretty fast.”

Although VW’s air cooled were commonly referred to as the “Bus,” they were officially known as the Type 2 Transporter or Microbus. It’s also been called the Kombi.

You’ll find Gabriel’s full review of the ID Buzz in the video at the top of this post. His thoughts on VW’s EV reinvention of the classic Bus are sure to leave you smiling. 

Volkswagen’s first all-electric production van is expected to go on sale later this year in the U.S.  

It’s already on sale in Europe. Pricing had not been announced for the U.S. edition at the time of this post’s publication, but it’s expected to arrive with an estimated range of 300 miles and a 111 kWh battery pack along with bright and airy color combinations that will remind EV Riders of the famous air-cooled Type 2 Transporters.  

Other historic buses on display at The Amelia included a customized Type 2 Transporter that was dubbed the Half-Track Fox. Two axles were added to help get skiers and waitstaff up into German mountain resorts.

Thanks to an ever expanding charging infrastructure EV Riders are now getting their kicks on America’s “Mother Road,” Historic Route 66.

I recently drove my Mustang Mach-E EV more than 4,800 miles, exploring America, including what is perhaps its most historic road: Route 66.

After grabbing a charge at a Loves in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, I headed about a mile or so up the road to the Route 66 Auto Museum.

The wonderfully retro museum is home to more than 30 classic cars on display, along with plenty of memorabilia ranging from old hot rods and neon signs to historic gas pumps, toys and of course, a 1950s style snack bar.

But the cars are the real stars. Among my personal favorites that were on display, is the 1956 Cadillac included in the video at the top of this post.

Owner James “Bozo” Cordova has been rebuilding, modifying and restoring vehicles for 40 years.

He runs the museum along with his wife Anna and their children.

Although America is transitioning to an EV future, gasoline-powered classics like these will always have a special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts.

When we think of electric vehicles; Teslas, Chevy Bolts, Mustang Mach-Es and others probably come to mind. But, the history of EVs stretches back more than a century. 

During my cross-country Mustang Mach-E EV drive of more than 4,800 miles, I came across the 1914 Elwell-Parker electric baggage wagon in the EV Rider video at the top of this post. You’ll find it on display at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. 

The electric powered vehicle was used for decades at Union Station to transport mail through the train station’s underground tunnel system and to tow passenger luggage from one location to the other. 

Here’s another fun fact: electric cars were actually the best-selling automobiles produced at the turn of the 20^th century, according to Elwell-Parker. 

While Elwell-Parker is much better known today for its EV logistics solutions, like lift trucks, in its early years the Detroit Electric Car Company bought a controlling interest to guarantee it would have enough parts for its electric cars. That’s according to Elwell-Parker’s history page.

Ewell-Parker – founded in 1893 – is still in business, making things such as electric platform trucks. 

The company first gained prominence with its electric porters, which were originally an ordinary hand truck with batteries and a motor. 

Detroit Electric declared bankruptcy in 1929 as gasoline cars quickly overtook electrics. But Elwell-Parker survived, going on to invent the lift truck and it continues to innovate to this day.
